Through an inductive analysis of architecture commencement speeches, this study reveals that architecture school curricula in the US focuses on development of spatial problem solving skills which can be interpreted as art. Graduates are expected to acquire the remaining entry level skills through on the job training as interns. Such extreme lack of qualifications for licensure creates a prolonged gap between graduation and licensure leading to low morale among architecture graduates. Meanwhile, the public perception of architects as artists is stratified. This causal-effect study focuses on the degradation of the architect’s skills that has led to deprofessionalization of the architect.
